Although our deepest experiences of the spiritual are felt in a place beyond words, language is a necessary tool to capture and hold those experiences and to communicate them. But religious language is challenging for many in our liberal faith – in part because we may carry baggage from early religious experiences, in part because of the way public religious discourse frames the conversations. My longing is that we all might embrace these as creative challenges rather than immovable obstacles, and that we might become fluent and fluid, comfortable and generous, as we put words to the spiritual dimension of our lives.
